Whitefishing in Südkaernten
Fishing for cyprinids and other whitefish is very popular all over Europe and naturally in SuedKaernten as well. This is mostly due to the excellent stock of carp in the well-known Klopeiner, Turner, Klein and Goesseldorfer lakes and in the Drau Reservoir. Giant spiegel and schuppen-carp—weighing in at around 40 pounds—are caught each year in Suedkaernten. The stock of other cyprinides types such as schleie and doebel are landed again and again, tipping the scales. In the flowing rivers of the area, stock of doebel, barben, and nasen lure eager anglers.
The development of whitefishing, mostly coming out of England and Italy, didn’t stop at the borders of Kaernten. In our area anglers are also using techniques coming out of the competition scene and with great success.
The successful hunt for whitefish does not stop at baitfishing: Doebel, for example, can very well be caught with a spinrod. This is a well-known fact and happens daily at the mountain reservoir Freibach or at the Drau reservoir. Fly fishers are also beginning to treasure the fantastic potential of the Suedkaernten whitefish stock more and more. Whoever catches a carp with the nymphe on the Klein lake or hooks a barb or nase at the sidearm of the Drau river, will never forget the thrill.
