Flyfishing in Südkaernten
Running waters:
Flyfishing of salmonides in running waters is worldwide surely the best-known style of flyrod fishing. The classical variety is fishing with dryflies for trout and aeschen. Flyfishers enjoy this kind of fishing because they know it to be beautiful and fascinating. Also very interesting is fishing with nymphen, which imitates an insect as a larva in deep water. In Suedkarnten, Vellach and Kleine Drau are ideal places to fish for salmonides by flyrod. It doesn’t just have to be trout an aeschen: many rivers in Kaernten have an exciting stock of doebeln, barben, rotfedern, carp, river perch, zander and hecht. You can catch them all with your flyrod. In the last years in Germany, the Netherlands, the Benelux States, France, and in Italy an innovative flyfishing scene has developed. They catch the above-named fish with great success and also innovate the technical progress of European flyfishing. Also in Kaernten, flyfishers always look for alternative challenges.
Still waters:
For a long time flyfishing in lakes, ponds and old waters was basically unknown. Flyfishers are usually found in running waters. Stillwater fishing by flyrod, which has its origin on the British Isles, could only slowly develop in some of the Austrian mountain lakes. But the potential was quickly recognized. In the last years in the USA, flyfishing in lakes for schwarzbarsch and hecht has advanced. This development also found friends in Europe: flyfisher, who, incidentally, caught a hecht by a streamer, were infected by this “virus”. Spinn anglers, who lost hundreds of blinkers or wobblers while baiting a big hecht, recognized the function of a bunny-streamer. A single hook prepared with rabbit pelt suddenly captures more hechte per day than a blinker with a triple hook can in a week. No wonder: the bunny streamer hangs charmingly in the water and lures the big hecht, who has “bitten iron” a few times already. This kind of fishing has found many friends in Kaernten—mostly in Klein lake with its exciting stock of preyfish. Not all hechte are caught by the streamer. Popper and bass bugs–loud dry flies—are really noticed by the fish you can catch in Klein lake from boats like black barsche and zander. Flyfishing with nymphen for carp is also very exciting. An exact cast is necessary to catch the carp. When the carp gets the nymphe an unforgettable thrill begins for those doing the fishing.
