The Soča Zavod

The Soca is the pearl of the Slovenian rivers, a national treasure. Every Slovenian knows this and is proud of it. The unique turquoise water makes the Soca one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe, if not the most beautiful alpine river of all. From the river’s source to Tolmin, the Soca has preserved her original character of an indomitable beauty. The poet Simon Gregoric called this natural beauty the ‘daughter of the mountains’. So it`s no surprise that all Slovenians protested against a planned power plant and declared the Soca valley a national preservation area. The Soca, a tributary of the Adria, is an extraordinary fishing water because two kinds of salmonides who survived the preglacial period live here: The marmorata or Soca trout, who gave the river the name Soca. The marmorata is one of the bigger salmonides in the world existing only in the tributaries of the Adria. The other one is the Soca aesche, who lives only this river. The experts of ZZR breed the fish with great enthusiasm and expense and since a few years there are now many mother fishes. The rising generation is put in the Soca and its tributaries every year.

The Soča is one of the most difficult approachable waters in the ZZR districts. In some areas it is not possible to go fishing—above all in the Soca canyons, where you can jump over the water in the upper part and in the steep slopes of the valley. Sometimes big rocks come tumbling down here. Also, the approachable part of the water is running and deceitful, so it is advisable to go fishing in the wide and gravelled part of the Soca. There you can also catch many big fish.
